Quite simply, MetaData is (are?) data about data - that is, descriptions, annotations, and so forth.

For example, MetaData about a a piece of music might be:

  • Length
  • Composer
  • Name
  • Date recorded
  • Where recorded

MetaData in the context of filesystems usually refers to specific attributes like permissions, date of creation/last modification and who the owner is, all furnished and maintained by the operating system. Some rare filing systems (like BeFS and NTFS) allow you to attach any MetaData you like to a file.
