Take it away, RFC2100
The Naming of Hosts is a difficult matter,
        It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a host must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.

First of all, there's the name that the users use daily,
Such as venus, athena, and cisco, and ames,
Such as titan or sirius, hobbes or europa--
All of them sensible everyday names.

There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the web pages, some for the flames:
Such as mercury, phoenix, orion, and charon--
But all of them sensible everyday names.

But I tell you, a host needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can it keep its home page perpendicular,
And spread out its data, send pages world wide?

Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
        Like lothlorien, pothole, or kobyashi-maru,
Such as pearly-gates.vatican, or else diplomatic-
Names that never belong to more than one host.

But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
        And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover--
But THE NAMESERVER KNOWS, and will us'ually confess.

When you notice a client in rapt meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
The code is engaged in a deep consultation
On the address, the address, the address of its name:

                It's ineffable,
                effable,
                Effanineffable,
                Deep and inscrutable,
                singular
                Name.

So, what naming schemes could we consider...

Ships

This has been Nemo's naming scheme since 2001. It's kind of vague, but approximately: Desktops are fictional ships, servers are space ships. Laptops are satellites, game machines are "types" of ships. (bold = currently in use)

  • Nautilus - circa 2001-2005? - my original (CheekyHouse/Porch era) Desktop (and origin of this scheme) - replaced by Argo.
  • Minnow - circa 2001-2003? - a small desktop 486 serving as dialup/web proxy/dns/smtpd/httpd
  • Titanic - fileserver
  • Poseidon - fileserver
  • Yamato - short lived spare parts/guest campbellhouse desktop
  • Serenity - Campbellhouse fileserver
  • Argo - Campbellhouse era desktop - replaced by Pinafore
  • raft - X-Box from the Campbellhouse era. DVD drive effectively stopped working 2011. Mostly a functional media center, but functionally replaced by yacht. (except for MAME)
  • Pinafore - The Campbellhouse/Pharmacy/IOZoo era desktop, replaced by Thunderchild, but kept around as a windows box. PSU died late 2011 (not quite part of the great hardware failure of early 2012)
  • Enterprise - Xen remote virtual server - replaced by Endeavour
  • Valdez - A Pharmacy era fileserver
  • Endeavour - A Xen remote virtual server - replaced by discovery
  • falcon - Second Pharmacy era fileserver. Mobo/CPU/RAM/Case upgrade from thunderchild during the great hardware failure of early 2012. Given that it was reinstalled at this time, it may have been deserving of a new name, but this did not happen. The physical drives were carried across on the rebuild.
  • Sputnik - Pharmacy era Laptop (12" powerbook). Optical drive dead as of the great hardware failure of early 2012.
  • krikkitone - test box - hand-me-down parts in a 2RU case
  • gondola - Nintendo Wii - 2009
  • Discovery - Xen remote virtual server which replaced endeavour
  • Blackpearl - end of IOzoo era (2010) - G5 iMac. Badly malfunctioning as of the great hardware failure of early 2012. Replaced by ...?
  • Thunderchild - slumberland era brand new desktop (2010) First ground-up-new-parts (since nautilus anyway?) - replaced pinafore. Retired when the mobo/cpu/ram/case moved to falcon as of the great hardware failure of early 2012!
  • junk - TV that has network ability (2011)
  • canoe - PS3 (2011)
  • bounty - Slumberland era desktop (as of the great hardware failure of early 2012) - case from falcon with new mobo/CPU/RAM/SSD HD. Replaced Thunderchild.
  • yacht - new Slumberland era (early 2012) media center. To replace raft as the primary media center, and also replaces black pearl as primary OSX desktop. (is a mac mini)
  • paddle - the Nexus7 Android tablet. (Q1 2012)
  • mir - Dell laptop ex work (Q3 2013)
  • thunderroad - Macbook Pro (Q2 2014)
