In fact, when he was 12, he created a small one. A simple envelope with a photo, handwritten list of things I liked and friends... It was set to be opened a massive 18 years later! In the far-off time (from the perspective of 1987) of 2005!

Come 2005, and opened it was - for my 30th birthday. (TODO: find the abc news article about it! :) But better than that, a new capsule was created. Larger, and with contributions from many friends. This has a window of 12 years - to honour the original, but also so it can be opened when I'm 42! :)

2008 and I am planning a second "layer". Mainly because after it was sealed in 2005, I subsequently got a late arrival (photos of the 2005 party, I think). So I solicited letters from friends... nothing big, just enough to go in a manilla folder beside the original. Late 2008 and that will be sealed.

I'm subsequently toying with the idea of a rolling update... a proposed timeline is below. Note that each time a capsule is opened and a new one created, the old capsule should be included within!

  • 1987 - Nemo age 12
    • Sealed capsule for 18 year duration (2005)
  • 2005 - Nemo age 30
    • Opened 1987, created new (and included 1987s inside) for 12 year duration (2017)
  • 2008 - Nemo age 33
    • New layer to 2005s. 9 year duration (2017)

  • 2012 - Nemo age 37
    • Plan to create new layer with 11 year duration (2023)
  • 2017 - Nemo age 42
    • Planned opening of 2005/2008 layers. Create new capsule for 12 year duration (2029)
  • 2023 - Nemo age 48
    • Planned opening of 2012 layer. Create new capsule for 16 years (2039)
  • 2025 - Nemo aged 50 - half century old
    • Add new layer to 2023 layer for 14 years (2039)
  • 2029 - Nemo age 54
    • Planned opening of 2017 layer. Create new with capsule with 10 year duration (2039)
  • 2039 - Nemo age 64 (when I'm sixty-four)
    • Planned opening of 2023 and 2029 layer. This will be the first time since 2005 (age 30) that all layers are open at once!
    • Create new capsule. Multiple to continue the streams? One long and one short?
  • 2044 - Nemo aged 69. Nice number
  • 2050 - Nemo aged 75. Middle of the century, Nemo 3/4 of a century old
  • 2059 - Nemo aged 84 (2x 42)
    • Time for another 'all layers'  ?
  • 2075 - Nemo aged 100
